ROLLOVER CRASH: Chico custodian of CHP died after single accident

June 4, 2010

Chico - A custodian at Chico office of California Highway Patrol died after a roll over crash on Highway 32 on Thursday at 10:20 a.m.

Authorities said Jason Scott Tourville, 36 years old, was traversing Highway 32 at 65 mph when his car swerved to the right shoulder on a curve. The car rolled over three times across the westbound lane.

Tourville sustained serious injuries and died minutes after being rescued, according to CHP reports. He left his work earlier after receiving a call from a family member. He was heading home to Forest Ranch.

A witness, Nick Alzano of Cal Fire department, said the car overcorrected and overturned multiple times. He reached out to revive the victim, but the pulse was weak.

Residents who had medical training tried to apply CPR chest compressions. Paramedics arrived minutes after to administer emergency treatment, but the pulse flatlined.

CHP officers said that Tourville might have been ejected from the car, and the lap belt was unused. Investigators commented that without the lap belt, the driver may slip down during a rollover.
