Pedestrian Accident: Teenage girl killed in Aprilia hit and run accident

April 26, 2010

Los Angeles - A teenage girl was pronounced dead on the scene after sustaining fatal injuries from a minivan hit and run accident near Aprilia Avenue.

Chanel Lenard, along with another girl, was heading home at 154th Street near Aprilia Avenue when a suspected drunk driver hit them at 12:40 am, Los Angeles County Sheriff's official said.

Lenard, 16 years old, died instantly. The other girl sustained severe injuries, and was rushed to St. Francis Medical Center, Compton Station Deputy Benjamin Grubb said.

Witnesses reported to officials that the gray Mercury Voyager minivan was speeding at about 60 mph and failed to stop and help the pedestrians.

Police officials identified the driver as Juan Garay of Compton, 22 years old. He was arrested a few blocks from the scene.

"Garay did not pass the field sobriety test", Grubb said.
