Truck Accident Ignites 710 freeway in Long Beach

June 14, 2009

Long Beach – A 51 year old driver was killed after a solo crash of a tanker that was carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline at the entrance of the 710 freeway from the 91 freeway in Long Beach.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at around 5:45 p.m. The truck was leaving the eastbound 91 to merge onto the northbound 710 when it hit a guardrail, flipped on the side and ignited in flames.

The heat from the flames was so intense that it popped large pieces of concrete from the road and structural engineers have been called to assess the damage.

The driver of the truck was pronounced dead on the scene.

Because of the accident, the ramp to the northbound 710 from the 91 freeway along with one lane of the 91will be closed until further notice.

The police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
